Jockey Eibar Coa jailed in Davie battery case

Eibar Coa, a top jockey in South Florida horse racing, was jailed Monday on a domestic battery charge after his wife told police Coa punched her in the face.
Coa, 39, was being held without bond Monday evening at the Broward Main Jail.
His wife, Rebeca Coa, told police she and her husband had been at a club early Monday, and she decided to leave the club alone after her husband became intoxicated, according to an arrest report. It goes on to state that Eibar Coa arrived home shortly after, and Rebeca Coa at some point locked herself in a bathroom.
Eibar Coa broke into the bathroom, began yelling at his wife and then punched her, leaving her with a swollen left cheek and a busted lip, police said.
Rebeca Coa contacted police and reported the fight at about 2:30 a.m.
A native of Monagas, Venezuela, Coa began riding in his country before moving to the United States in 1993. He reached a career milestone in July 2010, riding his 4,000th winner, according to an Associated Press article about the win.
Coa won his 4,000th race aboard Maddy's Crowd at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., where he also won riding titles in 2001 and 2002. He told the Associated Press last year that he was happy to reach the milestone at the track he calls "a special place."
In addition to the riding titles at Monmouth, Coa has been a top jockey at South Florida's Calder Race Course and Gulfstream Park.
At Gulfstream on Jan. 15, Coa rode Big Drama, winning the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector Stakes.
